Learning about the Money-Story through stories, art and silences: Applying Indigenous Methodologies’
This paper uses a research paradigm which privileges Indigenous understandings, to examine the cultural shaping of money in remote Indigenous communities i.e. ‘Indigenous money’ as adopted by Vinita Godinho as part of her doctoral studies at RMIT University (Melbourne, Australia).
The Indigenous research paradigm and associated Indigenous research methodologies allows the lead author to ‘see’ money through the eyes of her Indigenous participants. The research team finds that it is as important to listen to the participants’ silences, as their stories about money. The participants’ drawings about money also expose deep-seated beliefs, values and feelings, which conversations alone cannot capture.
